Truing tool advancer jig

USPTO Application #: 20060211350
Title: Truing tool advancer jig
Abstract: A truing tool advancer jig is a unit comprising three parts: a jig body; a feed screw; and a clamping screw. The jig body is mounted on the universal support of a grinder and securely positioned thereon by adjustment of the clamping screw. A truing tool is mounted on the jig body. Once the tool is properly mounted, the operator need only turn the feed screw to traverse the truing tool over the grinding wheel surface to affect resurfacing of the grinding wheel.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0001] 1. Field of the Invention

[0002] The present invention generally relates to power tools. More specifically, the present invention is drawn to a hand-manipulated truing tool and advancer jig for a grinding tool.

[0003] 2. Description of the Related Art

[0004] The present invention is specifically designed and constructed for use with the popular "TORMEK SuperGrind" wet grinder series. Heretofore, truing of the above wet grinder required the application of thumb pressure by the operator to advance the truing tool across the face of the wheel. This endeavor requires a great amount of skill, concentration and patience. Because of the slow speed of the wheel, the truing tool must. be advanced very slowly, thereby potentially causing operator fatigue. Operator fatigue can result in errors, which errors can cause lines, gouges and missed areas on the wheel face. If an error occurs, a stone grader must be employed to remove the imperfections and dress the missed areas. This scenario increases both labor and expense. The art would certainly welcome a tool that would alleviate user fatigue, thereby increasing the efficiency of the truing process.

[0005] The related art, as cited and identified in the accompanying IDS, discloses tools that are utilized to enhance the truing and dressing process for grinders.

[0006] However, none of the cited and identified inventions and patents, taken either singly or in combination, is seen to disclose a truing tool advancer jig as will subsequently be described and claimed in the instant invention.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] The truing tool advancer jig of the instant invention is a unit comprising three parts: a jig body; a feed screw; and a clamping screw. The jig body is mounted on the universal support of the "TORMEK" grinder and securely positioned thereon by adjustment of the clamping screw. A truing tool is mounted on the jig body. Once the tool is properly mounted, the operator need only turn the feed screw to traverse the truing tool over the grinding wheel surface to affect resurfacing of the grinding wheel.

[0008] A clear understanding of the present invention will become readily apparent upon further review of the following specification and drawings.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0009] FIG. 1 is an environmental, perspective view of a truing tool advancer jig according to the present invention.

[0010] FIG. 2 is perspective view of a truing tool advancer jig according to the present invention.

[0011] FIG. 3 is a top view of a truing tool advancer jig according to the present invention.

[0012] FIG. 4 is a front view of a truing tool advancer jig according to the present invention.

[0013] Similar reference characters denote corresponding features consistently throughout the attached drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0014] Attention is first directed to FIG. 1 wherein the truing tool advancer jig of the instant invention is generally indicated. at 10. Advancer jig 10 is mounted on the universal support 12 of a "TORMEK" grinder 14. As illustrated, universal support 12 has been adjusted to the manufacturer's recommended height.

[0015] As best seen in FIGS. 2-4, advancer jig 10 comprises three main elements: a jig body 20; a clamping screw 22; and a feed screw 24, which feed screw 24 is provided with a handle 24a at a proximate end. A distal end 24b is adapted to receive a conventional truing tool (diamond) thereon. Jig body 20 is configured as a rectangular block having a U-shaped passageway 20a therein. Passageway 20a is sized to fit over universal support 12. A second threaded passageway 20b is arranged perpendicularly to and opens into passageway 20a. Passageway 20b receives clamping screw 22 therein. A third threaded passageway 20c is disposed through jig body 20 and is parallel with U-shaped passageway 20a. Passageway 20c receives feed screw 24 therethrough. It should be noted that the components of the advancer jig are dimensioned to provide proper and safe clearances when mounted on the universal support.

[0016] The advancer jig is very easy to use. The jig body is mounted on the universal support and secured thereon by tightening of the clamping screw. The truing tool is then mounted in the conventional manner. There is no guesswork in that the truing tool is positioned just ahead of the grinding wheel's edge. To begin truing, the operator merely turns the feed screw clockwise (slowly) which advances the truing tool across the grinding wheel in a smooth, steady and effortless action. If the operator desires to dress the wheel in both directions, the feed screw is turned counter-clockwise. Use of the advancer jig virtually eliminates the need to utilize a stone grader.

[0017] It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the embodiment described above, but encompasses any and all embodiments within the scope of the following claims.
