Modular printer with opposing print media entry and exit slots

USPTO Application #: 20070273727
Title: Modular printer with opposing print media entry and exit slots
Abstract: The present invention relates to a modular printer. The modular printer includes at least two modules each defining oppositely located complementary connectors to facilitate interconnection of the modules in any order. Each module includes a serial bus including power and data lines to enable communication between the modules. One of the modules is a printer module including an elongate body defining opposing print media entry and exit slots. A printhead is housed within the body, and is configured to print upon print media inserted into the print media entry slot and which then exits through the print media exit slot. (end of abstract)

No. 09/575,182 filed on May 23, 2000 all of which are herein incorporated by reference.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The invention relates to a compact printer system able to print full-color, business card size documents from a device about the size of a pen. The system includes various hot-connectable modules that provide a range of functions. In particular the invention relates to a compact color printer that provides a print function for the compact printer system.

[0003] Reference may be had to co-pending applications claiming priority from Australian Provisional Patent Application number PQ0560 dated 25 May 1999. The co-pending applications describe related modules and methods for implementing the compact printer system. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0004] Microelectronic manufacturing techniques have led to the miniaturization of numerous devices. Mobile phones, personal digital assistant devices, and digital cameras are very common examples of the miniaturization trend.

[0005] One device that has not seen the advantage of microelectronic manufacturing techniques is the printer. Commercially available printers are large compared to many of the devices they could support. For instance, it is impractical to carry a color printer for the purpose of instantly printing photographs taken with known compact digital cameras.

[0006] A compact printhead has been described in co-pending United States Patent/Applications to the present application and hereby incorporated by cross reference: TABLE-US-00002 USSN Docket No. Title 7,018,016 MJ62 Fluidic seal for an ink jet nozzle assembly 6,428,133 IJ52 Ink jet printhead having a moving nozzle with an externally arranged actuator 6,526,658 IJM52 Method of manufacture of an ink jet printhead having a moving nozzle with an externally arranged actuator 6,328,417 MJ63 Ink jet printhead nozzle array 6,390,591 MJ58 Nozzle guard for an ink jet printhead

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] In one form, the invention resides in a printer module for a compact printer system comprising:

[0008] an elongate body;

[0009] a stationary printhead housed within said body,

[0010] means for moving a printable media past said stationary printhead;

[0011] an ink reservoir within said body and communicating with said printhead;

[0012] means within said body for storing an image to be printed by said printhead; and

[0013] means for transferring said image to said printhead;

[0014] said printhead printing said image on substantially the full width of said printable media in a single pass.

[0015] According to an embodiment of the present invention there is provided a capping device for a printer having a printhead and at least one media feed roller, said capping device movable between an open position, in which the printhead may deposit ink on print media, and a closed position, in which the capping device blocks the printhead from depositiong ink on said media, said capping device being operatively connected to the at least one media feed roller whereby motion of said feed roller moves the capping device between said open and closed position.

[0016] Preferably, the capping device is connected to the at least one roller via a clutch.

[0017] Preferably, the clutch is a friction clutch.

[0018] Further features of the invention will be evident from the following description.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0019] In order to assist with describing preferred embodiments of the invention, reference will be made to the following figures in which:

[0020] FIG. 1 is a printer module;
