CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of the filing date of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60/592,887 filed Jul. 30, 2004, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present invention relates to compositions and methods for styling hair. More particularly, the invention relates to hair styling compositions and methods that, in preferred embodiments, enable repeated fixing and shaping of hair without reapplication of hair styling compositions or heat.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Fixing hair in place is an important element in hair styling, and this generally involves either fixing a shape that has already been styled, or simultaneously shaping and fixing of the hair.

[0004] There are countless products available to consumers to style his/her hair in a particular shape or configuration and to maintain the desired shape or configuration intact. Hold is usually accomplished by the delivery of a composition containing a film former and/or an adhesive that remains on hair after evaporation of some or all of the carrier.

[0005] While the hair styling compositions currently on the market are very effective in holding the hair in a desired shape or configuration, many are not designed to allow the hairstyle to be later modified to a desired shape or reshaped into the original style without reapplying a hair styling composition and/or heat. Moreover, under various kinds of stress, hairstyles resulting from the use of conventional products have a tendency to take on an undesirable permanent set, which cannot easily be modified.

[0006] The invention described in U.S. Pat. No. 6,548,051 overcomes the above shortcomings of traditional hair styling composition by providing a reshapable hair styling composition. The patent discloses a hair styling composition comprising, optionally in a cosmetically acceptable carrier, at least one adhesive particle, wherein the at least one adhesive particle comprises at least one substrate and at least one partial coating, wherein the at least one adhesive particle is present in an amount effective to obtain a reshapable effect. This patent also describes a method of providing a reshapable effect to the hair by applying to the hair reshapable hair styling composition explained above.

[0007] U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2002/0059941 also describes a hair styling composition that provides a reshapable hair styling composition. The application discloses a hair styling composition that comprises at least one encapsulated adhesive, optionally in a cosmetically acceptable carrier, wherein the at least one encapsulated adhesive comprises at least one adhesive encapsulated by at least one encapsulating material.

[0008] While there have been pioneering advances in hair styling products by the introduction of these reshapable hair care systems, further improvement remains desirable. Further advances in adjusting the degree of adhesion and improving the overall look, feel and manageability of hair are still worthy, if not lofty goals.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0009] Unexpectedly, it has now been found that a composition can be produced that provides significantly improved hair styling properties. In one embodiment, the present invention allows one to modify and/or adjust the adhesive properties of a reshapable hair care system by the concurrent use of both adhesive and non-adhesive particles in hair styling products.

[0010] In another embodiment, the present invention provides formulations that are effective in holding the hair in a desired shape or configuration. In a more particularly preferred embodiment, the present invention also permits repeated fixing into different styles and/or reshaping of hair. In one desirable aspect of the invention, this is accomplished without reapplication of additional hair styling compositions or heat.

[0011] In certain embodiments, the present invention facilitates imparting at least one desirable property such as, without limitation, reduced tactile stickiness, luster, shine, silky feel or appearance to hair, particularly hair treated with products containing adhesive particles. In certain other embodiments, the present invention facilitates substantially maintaining the reshapability of hair to which it is applied. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the present invention provides formulations that facilitate imparting at least one desirable property such as, without limitation, reduced tactile stickiness, luster, shine, silky feel and/or appearance, while substantially maintaining the hair's fixability and reshapability.

[0012] In one embodiment, the present invention comprises at least one non-adhesive particle and at least one adhesive particle, optionally in a cosmetically acceptable carrier. The presence of the at least one non-adhesive particle, when properly selected and provided in effective amounts relative to the adhesive particles, can significantly reduce at least one of the sometimes undesirable properties that can be realized by use of some reshapable systems such as, without limitation, tacky, sticky feel or dull appearance of hair. Reduction is measured by the application of these products when compared to the application of an identical formulation without the non-adhesive particles as judged by hair stylists. Moreover, the presence of the at least one non-adhesive particle when properly selected and provided in effective amounts relative to the amount of adhesive particles, can substantially maintain the fixability and reshapability (collectively the "reshapable effect") of hair and a hairstyle, again when compared to an identical formulation without the non-adhesive particles and again in the judgment of hair stylists. The hair style may even remain reshapable, with normal use for about 24 hours or more.

[0013] In one embodiment, the present invention is especially suitable for providing "acceptable results" in terms of imparting or lessening the degree of reduction in at least one desirable property such as, without limitation, greasiness, stickiness, tackiness, smoothness, silkiness or appearance, to the hair when compared to an identical formulation without the non-adhesive particles judged by professional stylists. In yet another embodiment, the hair styling composition both substantially maintains a reshapable effect and provides acceptable results.

[0014] In one embodiment, the present invention provides hair styling compositions or formulations including at least one adhesive particle (a term which includes encapsulated adhesive particles, non-encapsulated adhesive particles or a mixture thereof) and at least one non-adhesive particle. In one embodiment, the present invention provides hair styling compositions or formulations including at least one adhesive particle (a term which includes encapsulated adhesive particles, non-encapsulated adhesive particles or a mixture thereof) and at least one non-adhesive particle in an amount that is effective to reduce at least one undesirable property such as, without limitation, greasy, tacky, sticky feel or dull appearance of hair while substantially maintaining hold or the reshapable effect when compared to an identical formulation without the non-adhesive particles.

[0015] Another aspect of the present invention is a hair styling composition including both adhesive and non-adhesive particles. The adhesive particles can be provided in an effective amount of at least up to about 15% by weight of the formulation. In another embodiment, the adhesive particles are provided in an amount of between about 0.05% to about 15% by weight of the finished formulation or product and in yet another embodiment, between about 0.05% and about 3.0%. In still another embodiment, the adhesive particles are provided in an amount of between about 0.05% and about 2.0% by weight. In another embodiment, the non-adhesive particles can be provided in an effective amount of up to about 10% by weight of the formulation or product. In yet another embodiment, the non-adhesive particles are provided in an amount of between about 0.03% to about 2.0% by weight of the finished formulation or product and in yet another embodiment, between about 0.04% and about 0.3%. In still another embodiment, the non-adhesive particles are provided in an amount of between about 0.04% and about 0.2% by weight.

[0016] In an embodiment, the adhesive particles are provided in an amount that is equal to or greater than the amount of the non-adhesive particles. In another embodiment, the ratio of adhesive to non-adhesive particles is 1:1 to 250:1. In another embodiment, the ratio is from about 1:1 to about 100:1. In still another embodiment, the ratio is from about 2:1 to about 50:1 and in yet another embodiment from about 5:1 to about 45:1, and in still another embodiment, from about 10:1 to about 25:1. These ratios are particularly, but not exclusively, useful for mousse formulations.

[0017] In yet another embodiment, the composition is a gel and the adhesive particles are provided in an amount from between about 0.05% to about 15% by weight of the gel formulation and the non-adhesive particles are provided in an amount of from about 0.03% to about 2.0%, more preferably from about 0.04% to about 0.3% by weight of the gel formulation and in still a more preferred embodiment, the non-adhesive particles are present in an amount of about 0.04% to about 0.2% by weight of the gel.

[0018] In another embodiment, the composition is a mousse having from about 0.1% to about 5% adhesive particles and from about 0.03% to about 2.0% non-adhesive particles by weight of the mousse formulation, more preferably from about 0.04% to about 0.3% by weight of the gel formulation and in still a more preferred embodiment, the non-adhesive particles are present in an amount of about 0.04% to about 0.2% by weight of the mousse.

[0019] In another embodiment of the invention, the non-adhesive particles are polymeric and have a core/shell structure. Particularly preferred materials for the core/shell particles are polystyrene and polymethyl methacrylate, where either is used as the core or shell material. Even more preferably, polystyrene is the core material, and polymethyl methacrylate is the shell material.

[0020] In yet another embodiment, the non-adhesive particles of the invention are inorganic. Mixtures of any of the previously discussed polymeric particles with such inorganic particles, in any proportion, are also contemplated.

[0021] In yet another embodiment of the invention, a blend of non-adhesive particles of different polymeric materials (at least one of which is not a core/shell structure), with or without inorganic non-adhesive particles, may be used. Representative polymeric materials include, but are not limited to, the same materials used in the aforementioned core/shell particles, such as polystyrene, and polymethyl methacrylate. The blend may include a mixture of two or more different types of polymer particles.
