CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 60/671,686, filed Apr. 16, 2005, the entire contents of which is incorporated herein by its reference.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] 1. Field of the Invention

[0003] The present invention relates generally to safety and training aids for gymnasts and, more particularly, to gymnastics safety and training aid devices for the high bar and other apparatus.

[0004] 2. Prior Art

[0005] Serious injury has often occurred as a result of young gymnasts loosing their grip while training on the high bar apparatus and falling. Similar injuries occur as a result of a gymnast loosing his or her grip on the high bar, parallel bars or the loop and falling. A need therefore exists in the art of gymnastics for preventing a gymnast from falling on the ground after loosing his or her grip on gymnastic equipment, such as the high bar, the loop or the parallel bars. Additionally, a need exists in the art of gymnastics for preventing a gymnast from striking gymnastic equipment, such as a high bar or parallel bar during a gymnastic routine or practice.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0006] Accordingly, a sleeve for use on gymnastics equipment having a bar which is held by a gymnast is provided. The sleeve comprising: a first half; and a second half, the first and second halves being secured to surround at least a portion of the bar such that the first and second halves rotate relative to the bar while the gymnast holds an outer portion of the first and second halves.

[0007] The first and second halves can be rotatably connected at a first end by a hinge. The hinge can comprise one or more pins disposed in mating holes on the first ends of the first and second halves. The hinge can comprise a flexible portion disposed at the first ends of the first and second halves.

[0008] The first and second halves can have means for releasably connecting second ends. The means for releasably connecting second ends can comprise one or more male locking portions at the second end of one of the first and second halves and one or more corresponding female locking portions at the other of the first and second halves such that each of the one or more male locking portions is releasably secured in a corresponding female locking portion.

[0009] The sleeve can further comprise a clamping element for securing the first and second halves to surround at least a portion of the bar. The clamping element can comprises one or more spring clamps disposed over an outer portion of the first and second halves for biasing the first and second halves together around the bar. The clamping element can comprise one or more tube segments disposed over an outer portion of the first and second halves for biasing the first and second halves together around the bar.

[0010] The sleeve can comprise two sleeves, each corresponding to a hand of the gymnast.

[0011] Also provided is an apparatus for use with gymnastics equipment having a bar which is held by a gymnast. The apparatus comprising: one or more sleeves surrounding at least a portion of the bar and rotating relative to the bar while the gymnast holds an outer portion of the one or more sleeves; at least one harness for securing around at least a portion of a torso of a gymnast; and one or more straps fixed at a first end to the harness and to the one or more sleeves at a second end.

[0012] The one or more sleeves can have one or more slots for accepting the second end of the one or more straps.

[0013] The one or more sleeves can have a hole and the second end of the one or more straps has a karabiner for engagement to the hole.

[0014] The one or more straps can comprise two straps, each of which is attached to the one or more sleeves. The one or more sleeves can comprise two sleeves corresponding to each of two hands of the gymnast, wherein each of the two straps is attached to a corresponding one of the two sleeves.

[0015] Still yet provided is a method for providing one or more rotating sleeves to a bar of gymnastics equipment. The method comprising: providing the one or more sleeves in first and second halves; and releasably securing the first and second halves to surround at least a portion of the bar such that the first and second halves rotate relative to the bar while the gymnast holds an outer portion of the first and second halves.

[0016] The method can further comprise rotatably connecting a first end of the first and second halves by a hinge.

[0017] The method can further comprise releasably connecting the first and second halves at second ends.

[0018] The releasably securing can comprise biasing the first and second halves together around the bar.

[0019] The method can further comprise securing a harness to the gymnast and securing a portion of the harness to the one or more sleeves.
