93. A method of computer-assisted text generation, the method comprising: (a) receiving a user input signal via a computer, the user input signal corresponding to a partial text entry comprising at least a first character; (b) in response to receipt of the first character of the partial text entry, obtaining via the computer a first plurality of completion candidates from a dictionary based on a set of predetermined metrics; and (c) providing the first plurality of completion candidates to an internet appliance remote from the computer for display of the first plurality of completion candidates on a display device associated with the internet appliance, wherein the display device is remote from the computer.

94. The method of claim 93, further comprising: (a) selecting a particular completion candidate from the first plurality of completion candidates in response to a first type of user input signal associated with the particular completion candidate; and (b) modifying the partial text entry to correspond to the particular completion candidate selected from among the first plurality of completion candidates at least while the particular completion candidate remains selected.

95. The method of claim 94, further comprising providing the modified partial text entry to the internet appliance for display on the display device.

96. The method of claim 94, further comprising displaying the modified partial text entry on the display device associated with the internet appliance.

97. The method of claim 94, further comprising: (a) detecting modification of the partial text entry by the user via the computer; and (b) obtaining a modified plurality of completion candidates from the dictionary based on the modified partial text entry, wherein each of the modified plurality of completion candidates includes a portion matching the modified partial text entry; wherein the set of predetermined metrics comprises instructions for obtaining the first plurality of completion candidates and the modified plurality of completion candidates from the dictionary on the basis of frequency values stored in the dictionary.

98. The method of claim 97, further comprising displaying the first plurality of completion candidates on the display device associated with the internet appliance.

99. The method of claim 98, further comprising displaying the modified plurality of completion candidates on the display device associated with the internet appliance.

100. The method of claim 93, further comprising: (a) detecting modification of the partial text entry by the user via the computer; and (b) obtaining a modified plurality of completion candidates from the dictionary based on the modified partial text entry, wherein each of the modified plurality of completion candidates includes a portion matching the modified partial text entry.

101. The method of claim 100, wherein each individual completion candidate from either the first plurality of completion candidates or the modified plurality of completion candidates is displayed in a search list with the part of the individual completion candidate matching the partial text entry displayed in a manner different from the remaining part of the individual completion candidate.

102. The method of claim 93, wherein at least part of the partial text entry is generated by an input device remote from the computer.

103. The method of claim 93, wherein at least part of the partial text entry is generated by an input device associated with the internet appliance.

104. The method of claim 93, wherein the internet appliance is controlled via a remote control and wherein at least part of the partial text entry is generated via the remote control.

105. The method of claim 93, wherein at least part of the partial text entry is generated by a digitizing tablet associated with at least one of the computer and the internet appliance.

106. A computer-readable medium having computer-readable instructions for execution by a processing unit, the computer-readable instructions comprising: (a) instructions for receiving via a computer a user input signal corresponding to a partial text entry comprising at least a first character; (b) instruction for, in response to receipt of the first character of the partial text entry, obtaining via the computer a first plurality of completion candidates based on the partial text entry including obtaining the first plurality of completion candidates from a dictionary based on a set of predetermined metrics; and (c) instruction for, providing the first plurality of completion candidates to an internet appliance remote from the computer for display of the first plurality of completion candidates on a display device associated with the internet appliance, wherein the display device is remote from the computer.

The computer-readable medium of claim 106, the computer-readable instructions further comprising: (a) instructions for detecting modification of the partial text entry by the user via the computer; and (b) instructions for obtaining a modified plurality of completion candidates from the dictionary based on the modified partial text entry, wherein each of the modified plurality of completion candidates includes a portion matching the modified partial text entry.

108. The computer-readable medium of claim 107, the computer-readable instructions further comprising instructions for displaying the modified plurality of completion candidates on the display device associated with the internet appliance.

109. The computer-readable medium of claim 106, the computer-readable instructions further comprising instructions for displaying the first plurality of completion candidates on the display device associated with the internet appliance.

110. The computer-readable medium of claim 106, the computer-readable instructions further comprising instructions for receiving at least part of the partial text entry from an input device remote from the computer.

111. The computer-readable medium of claim 106, the computer-readable instructions further comprising instructions for receiving at least part of the partial text entry from an input device associated with the internet appliance.

112. The computer-readable medium of claim 106, the computer-readable instructions further comprising instructions for receiving at least part of the partial text entry from a remote control associated with the internet appliance.

113. The computer-readable medium of claim 106, the computer-readable instructions further comprising instructions for receiving at least part of the partial text entry from a digitizing tablet associated with at least one of the computer and the internet appliance.

114. A method of supporting text entry via an input device, the method comprising: (a) receiving via the input device user input associated with a partial text entry, the partial text entry comprising at least a first character; (b) in response to receipt of user input associated with the first character of the partial text entry, obtaining a first plurality of completion candidates from a dictionary, wherein each of the first plurality of completion candidates comprises at least a portion matching the partial text entry; and (c) providing the first plurality of completion candidates to a display device remote from the input device for display of the first plurality of completion candidates on the display device.

115. A computer-readable medium having computer-readable instructions for execution by a processing unit, the computer-readable instructions comprising: (a) instructions for receiving a partial text entry via an input device, the partial text entry comprising at least a first character; (b) instructions for, in response to receipt of the first character of the partial text entry, obtaining a first plurality of completion candidates from among a group of completion candidates stored in a dictionary, wherein each of the first plurality of completion candidates comprises at least a portion matching the partial text entry; and (c) instructions for providing the first plurality of completion candidates to a display device remote from the input device for display of the first plurality of completion candidates on the display device.

116. A system for supporting computer-assisted text generation for remote display, the system comprising: (a) a computer operable to communicate via the Internet; (b) a computer-readable medium operable to communicate with the computer, the computer-readable medium comprising computer-readable instructions for directing the computer to assist with text generation by: (i) receiving a user input signal via the computer, the user input signal associated with a partial text entry comprising at least a first character; (ii) obtaining, via the computer, a first plurality of completion candidates from a dictionary stored on at least one of the computer and the computer-readable medium, wherein the first plurality of completion candidates are obtained from the dictionary based on a set of predetermined metrics; and (iii) communicating, via the Internet, the first plurality of completion candidates to a display device remote from the computer for display of the first plurality of completion candidates on the display device.

117. The system of claim 116, wherein the set of predetermined metrics comprises instructions for obtaining the first plurality of completion candidates from the dictionary on the basis of frequency values stored in the dictionary.
