Brief Patent Description - Full Patent Description - Patent Application Claims TECHNICAL FIELD [0001] The present invention generally relates to compactor wheels. BACKGROUND [0002] Compactors play an important role in waste management and are used for compacting waste at large dumps. Compactors can also be used for compacting soil during road construction, for example. These compactors include one or more compactor wheels or drums which roll over the garbage to be compacted. [0003] A common problem with compacting garbage in this manner is that wire and other elongate waste material passes laterally over the compactor wheel and becomes wrapped around an axle to which the compactor wheel is rotationally fastened. The waste material must then be manually removed, and this removal can often be a dangerous, laborious and time-consuming process. [0004] It is an object of the present invention to provide a means for impeding the wrapping of wire and other elongate material around the axle to which the compactor wheel is fastened. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0005] According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a compactor wheel assembly that comprises: [0006] a compactor rim; and [0007] a modular guard assembly having plurality of replaceable guard modules mounted, in a detachable manner, on the compactor rim, to inhibit the movement of wrapping-type debris inwardly towards an axle to which the rim is mounted, in use. [0008] The modular guard assembly may include a plurality of guard mounting members positioned circumferentially about the compactor rim, the guard modules being mounted on the mounting members. [0009] The modular guard assembly may include fastening devices for fastening each guard module to at least one of the guard mounting members in a detachable manner. [0010] The plurality of guard mounting members may be fast with the compactor rim and may extend radially from an operatively inner end portion of the compactor rim, each pair of adjacent guard mounting members being equidistant with respect to each other. [0011] Each guard module may be formed integrally from a strip of metal. [0012] Each module may have one end with a dog-legged lesser edge longitudinal profile and another end with a substantially straight lesser edge longitudinal profile with a post of each mounting member received between the dog-legged end of one respective module and the straight end of a consecutive respective module such that together the modules define a substantially uniform outwardly facing surface. [0013] Each module may define an opening at each end and each post may define a corresponding opening, the openings being configured so that when the posts are received between associated ends of consecutive modules, the openings are in register with each other to permit the modules to be fastened to the posts. The fastening devices may include elongate fastening components receivable through the registered openings. [0014] Each fastening device may include the elongate fastening component in the form of a pin, the pin having a head and a shank defining an aperture, and a fastener that is receivable through the aperture. The fastener and the aperture may be configured so that associated ends of the consecutive modules and the interposed post are compressed together between the fastener and the flared head. [0015] Each fastener may be a sprung member that is receivable in the aperture so that the associated ends of the consecutive modules and the interposed post are compressed together between at least one portion of the sprung member and the head. [0016] The sprung member may be a spring plate that has a waveform profile with an apex that is receivable in said aperture and legs extending out of the pin to bear against one of the ends of the consecutive modules. [0017] Instead, the sprung member may be a spring plate with a longitudinal profile that defines a pair of apices interposed between a pair of legs, the pin being received in a trough defined between the apices and the legs extending out of the pin to bear against one of the ends of the consecutive modules. [0018] According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a compactor wheel assembly comprising: [0019] a compactor rim; and [0020] a plurality of guard mounting members positioned circumferentially about the compactor rim, the guard mounting members being configured to permit a plurality of replaceable guard modules to be mounted on the guard mounting members with fastening devices for fastening each guard module to at least one of the guard mounting members in a detachable manner, to inhibit the movement of wrapping-type debris inwardly towards an axle to which the compactor rim is mounted. [0021] According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a compactor wheel assembly that comprises: [0022] a compactor rim; [0023] a plurality of guard mounting members positioned circumferentially about the compactor rim; [0024] a plurality of replaceable guard modules mounted on the guard mounting members and configured to inhibit the movement of wrapping-type debris inwardly towards an axle to which the compactor rim is mounted; and [0025] fastening devices for fastening each guard module to at least one of the guard mounting members in a detachable manner. [0026] The compactor wheel assembly may further include another modular guard for surrounding the compactor wheel. The compactor wheel assembly may further include another mounting means for arrangement on the compactor wheel and to which the other modular guard can be mounted. [0027] The compactor wheel may include a plurality of replaceable cleats or teeth for engaging with the garbage in a conventional manner. [0028] According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a guard module for mounting to the mounting means of the compactor wheel assembly. [0029] According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, there is provided a flanged mounting post of the mounting means. Continue reading...
