Chair control for synchronized movement of chair seat and back, and chair having same

USPTO Application #: 20060138833
Title: Chair control for synchronized movement of chair seat and back, and chair having same
Abstract: A chair seat adjustment mechanism has a support, a back bracket for attachment to a chair back and a seat plate for attachment to a chair seat. The back bracket is pivotally mounted to the support at a first pivot. The seat plate, which extends above the support, is pivotally mounted to the back bracket at a second pivot and slidably hinged to the support at a third pivot. The second pivot is positioned above and rearwardly of the first pivot. The third pivot is positioned forwardly of the second pivot such that rearward titling of the back bracket draws the seat plate rearwardly and tilts a rear of the seat plate downwardly. The third pivot may be a pivot pin on the support slidably received in an elongate slot on the seat plate, which may be slightly declined towards the back. A chair having such a chair seat adjustment mechanism is more comfortable for some users. (end of abstract)

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to chair control mechanisms, particularly to chair seat adjustment mechanisms for synchronized movements of chair seat and chair back, and chairs having the same.

BACKGROUND

[0002] Office chairs often allow for titling of the chair back. It has been found that, for many users, it is more comfortable if the seat position is adjusted in synchronization with the back tilt. For example, there are office chairs where the seat tilts and/or shifts forwardly when the back is tilted rearwardly.

[0003] However, some users may find it uncomfortable if the seat tilts forwardly or shifts forwardly when the back is tilted. Further, some chair seat control mechanisms are relatively complex.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need for a simple chair control that allows synchronized movement of the chair seat and the chair back. There is also a need for a chair control that allows synchronized movement of the chair seat with the chair back, which may be more comfortable for users.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a chair seat adjustment mechanism, comprising: a support; a back bracket for attachment to a chair back, said back bracket pivotally mounted to said support at a first pivot; a seat plate extending above said support, said seat plate for attachment to a chair seat, said seat plate pivotally mounted to said back bracket at a second pivot and slidably hinged to said support at a third pivot, said second pivot positioned above and rearwardly of said first pivot and said third pivot positioned forwardly of said second pivot such that rearward titling of said back bracket draws said seat plate rearwardly and tilts a rear of said seat plate downwardly.

[0006] In accordance with further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a chair comprising: a seat; a back; a support; a back bracket attached to said back, said back bracket pivotally mounted to said support at a first pivot; and a seat plate attached to said seat and extending above said support, said seat plate pivotally mounted to said back bracket at a second pivot and slidably hinged to said support at a third pivot, said second pivot positioned above and rearwardly of said first pivot and said third pivot positioned forwardly of said second pivot such that rearward titling of said back draws said seat rearwardly and tilts a rear of said seat downwardly.

[0007] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a chair seat adjustment mechanism, comprising: support means for supporting a chair seat and a chair back; first attachment means for attaching to said chair back, said first attachment means pivotally mounted to said support means at a first pivot means; and second attachment means for attaching to said chair seat, said second attachment means extending above said support means, said second attachment means pivotally mounted to said first attachment means at a second pivot means and slidably hinged to said support means at a third pivot means, said second pivot means positioned above and rearwardly of said first pivot means and said third pivot means positioned forwardly of said second pivot means such that rearward titling of said first attachment means draws said second attachment means rearwardly and tilts a rear of said second attachment means downwardly.

[0008] In accordance with yet another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a chair seat adjustment mechanism, comprising: a support; a back bracket for attachment to a chair back, said back bracket pivotally mounted to said support at a first pivot; a seat plate extending above said support, said seat plate for attachment to a chair seat, said seat plate pivotally mounted to said back bracket at a second pivot and slidably hinged to said support at a third pivot, said second pivot positioned above said first pivot and either forwardly or rearwardly of both of said first and third pivots such that rearward titling of said back bracket draws said seat plate rearwardly and tilts said seat plate rearwardly.

[0009] Other aspects and features of the present invention will become apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art upon review of the following description of specific embodiments of the invention in conjunction with the accompanying figures.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0010] In the figures illustrating example embodiments of the invention,

[0011] FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a chair having a chair control;

[0012] FIGS. 2A and 2B are side elevations of a portion of the chair of FIG. 1 showing the chair control in two different positions;

[0013] FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the chair control of FIG. 1 in isolation;

[0014] FIGS. 4A and 4B are side elevations of an isolated component of the chair control of FIGS. 2A and 2B;

[0015] FIG. 5 is a diagram illustrating an alternative arrangement of the pivots; and

[0016] FIG. 6 is a diagram illustrating a further alternative arrangement of the pivots.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0017] Referring to FIG. 1, an exemplary embodiment of an aspect of the invention is a chair 10 having a chair control 12, which joins a chair seat 14 and a chair back 16 to a chair post 18. The post 18 may be adjustable in height. The chair control 12 may be supported by a single post, such as illustrated in FIG. 1, or by multiple posts or another suitable form of support.

[0018] Referring to FIGS. 2A and 2B, the chair back 16 can be tilted between a forward position (FIG. 2A) and a backward position (FIG. 2B). The chair seat 14 moves in synchronization with the tilting of the chair back 16 so as to tilt and shift rearwardly when the chair back is titled rearwardly. The movements of the chair seat 14 are controlled by chair control 12.

[0019] Referring to FIG. 3, the chair control 12, which is an exemplary embodiment of the invention, has a support, such as main frame 20, mountable to the post 18 for supporting the chair seat 14 and the chair back 16, a seat plate 24 for attachment to the chair seat 14, and a back bracket 26 for attachment to the chair back 16. The main frame 20 may define a cavity 22, which may conveniently accommodate various components of the chair control mechanism. Each of the seat plate 14 and back bracket 16 can be a channel-shaped bracket. One or both the seat plate 14 and back bracket 16 may, however, have other suitable shapes.
