FIELD OF INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates to the apparatus for playing a game and to the method of playing the game.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

[0003] According to one aspect of the present invention, an apparatus for playing a game comprises a set of cards, each card showing a plurality of symbols and indicator means, the indicator means being arranged relative to a sub-set of cards, to define one or more hands.

[0004] According to one embodiment of the invention the indicator means comprises means for defining a line, the cards of a sub-set being positioned with respect to the line such that all or only some of the symbols on each of the cards are located to one side of the line, the symbols located to one side of the line defining a hand. The symbols on the cards, located on the other side of the line may be discounted from the game or may define a second hand. The indicator means may alternatively define a plurality of lines defining multiple hands.

[0005] The line may be a straight line or a bent line, for example a curved, U shaped or skewer line, or a zig-zag line. The line may be defined by printing on a playing surface. Alternatively, the line may be formed by a wire or rod which is located over the cards. According to a further alternative the line may be formed by projecting a light or laser beam onto a playing surface. In yet a further embodiment, the line may be displayed on the display unit of a video game.

[0006] According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the indicator means may comprise means for selecting and/or rejecting individual symbols of the sub-set of cards, to indicate one or more hands. For example the indicator means may be a frame or card defining apertures, which when placed over a sub-set of cards will frame certain symbols, to define a hand. Alternatively, the indicator means, when placed over the sub-set of cards may obscure certain symbols, the symbols left visible making up the hand. According to a further embodiment, the indicator means may frame certain symbols, obscure other symbols, while leaving yet further symbols neither framed or obscured, to define two hands.

[0007] The symbols on the cards may correspond to those of a conventional pack of playing cards and the hand or hands defined in the manner described above may be used to play various known forms of card game, for example poker, baccarat, blackjack or variations thereof. Alternatively other symbols may be used, to play other games.
